The New Year is almost one day old! I've been feeling sentimental all day- missing family and the friends I got to spend the holidays with down in Florida. It was a wonderful two weeks.

But there is so much to look forward to this year! Getting healthy and happy and celebrating one very special occasion: my dear little sister's wedding!

I can't wait to help her with the planning and celebrate with showers and parties along the way.

My resolutions this year are the usual. Get healthy. Get organized. Get creative.

A few more specific goals:

1. Use up all the beauty products in my closet (before letting myself purchase another!)

2. Run the River Run down in Jacksonville on March 10

3. Pare down- sell/donate/get rid of clothes, shoes, jewelry, excess

4. Live a lighter, simpler, more spiritual life in general

I hope to turn to this blog a little more regularly, as a way to check in with my goals.

I've become obsessed with swans, at least the image of the gorgeous birds when used in home decorating.

A few weeks before Christmas I bought these (crazy?) tin swans on Etsy. They can actually be put out on the lawn, and they would probably look quite pretty in all the soft white snow we currently have, but maybe I'll wait until Spring. I like the idea of hanging them on the wall somewhere, too. Thank the Lord my husband is such a good sport!

When I was searching for swans on Etsy I also found this lovely old powder puff. It's made of swansdown and bone.

French Press-ing

My dear darling Danish friend brought me back the MOST wonderful gift for Christmas!

This Bodum Travel Press is the most amazing thing- every morning I fill it with my favorite loose tea and have a gourmet treat when I'm rushing to work in the cold. Of course you can also use it for coffee and I might get a second one for days when I want that (I like to keep my tea and coffee mugs separate- I'm a purist. Haha!)

I brought it to a conference last week and everyone wanted one! It comes in such cheery colors, it just brightens your day. Good to know you will soon be able to buy it online (here)!

Oh, and my favorite tea is the Moroccan Mint green tea from Harney and Sons.

Clean, fresh start

I was so lucky to have an extra day off from work today. I had to get up early to take Lar to the city, but I made up for it by spending an hour cozied up in bed when I get back.

Our bedroom has become one of my favorite places- it's nice to have a space become more and more what you want it to be. We still have a bit to do (finally getting a headboard together being one of the items on our list) but I feel so happy and calm in the space.

I especially love my little reading nook, with my beloved Amelie sofa and a pile of favorite books.

Grateful Table

We've all moved on to Christmas already, I know, but here is our Thanksgiving table. It was just the two of us, but we made a turkey and all the trimmings (including this warm Brussels sprout salad- so so good!).

I didn't set a terribly fancy table, but I did pull out some favorite vintage plates and our wedding silver. I've always said I'd be the gal to use her silver and crystal on a daily basis- why keep it stored away?- but as it turns out, it has become for special occasions. Maybe it'll be that way until I get a full enough set for every day!

With so much going on, I sometimes forget to focus on how much we do have. I'd like to resolve right now to focus on my blessings, instead of my hardships. A husband who is so good and works so hard, a sister who is my dearest friend, my precious parents and grandmother (with whom we Skyped all Thanksgiving Day!) and some of the best and most supportive girlfriends anyone could have. Harder to be grateful for are those who challenge me, but I am going to push myself to appreciate what they bring into my life and how much they cause me to grow and change.

The house has been turned into a Christmas wonderland and I'll share photos soon!

It's been nearly a week since we returned from our anniversary trip to New Orleans. The city has been much written about, much documented, so I'll just share a few of our highlights.

Music everywhere, on the streets, in the restaurants, at the many many clubs.

Pied Nu, Uptown on Magazine. If I had a store I'd want it to be exactly like this.

Front porches. This was at the wonderful shop Perch Home, on Magazine.

A tour of the wonderfully restored Beauregard-Keyes House- just look at that wallpaper!

Window shopping for antiques. I loved all the oyster plates.

The perfumed air, sweetened by tea olive trees.

French-influenced breakfasts. Mmmm.

I'm pretty much the worst at taking vacation photos and I think it's a sign that I'm too busy having a good time! One of our favorite memories, not photographed, was our Anniversary Sunday brunch at Commander's Palace. We started with cocktails (Apricot Fizz for me, Bloody Mary for Lar) and ended up bread pudding souffle with whiskey cream sauce. I mean...
In between there was sheer decadence, the most amazing food, live music- at one point our entire dining room got up and started dancing. It was so much fun!

It's easy to see how easily New Orleans is the favorite city of many. It's so different from any other place, so full of beauty and life, so much history and mystery. We had a wonderful week we had, celebrating such a place as well as our first year of marriage.

Simple Elegance

It's no secret that Penelope Cruz is a beautiful woman, but I recently watched the movie Elegy and was struck by her lovely style. In the film, she plays a young grad student and dresses with an elegance that leaves Ben Kingsley's worldly professor, to remark that she "was different, her posture was perfect...There was a sophistication that set her apart."

Her look is sweet (not cloying) and polished (bordering on perfect!). It really reminds you of the importance of refined basics: pearl studs, a black pencil skirt, trench coat, feminine little cardigans and a great pair of heels. Of course, Ms. Cruz's lovely features and perfect brows don't hurt a bit!

During a quick visit to the bookstore yesterday, the latest Vanity Fair stopped me in my tracks.

The iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, no matter how many photographs of her I see, always draws me in.

A new book, Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters, offers a glimpse of the star in her own words. Her own handwriting. Her own journal entries.

It's actually quite heartbreaking, but so utterly fascinating. The VF article describes her entries, some in leather-bound notebooks favored by writers of the day, some on stationary from the many hotels she frequented and lived in.

There's nothing glamorous or romantic about someone leaving this world before their time, but the details of her life continue to haunt us, so many years later. I imagine Marilyn fans the world over will be eager to explore this new book, which will offer insight into the beloved star's most candid thoughts and perhaps a glimpse of the woman beyond the glitz.

I've spoken before of my love for Eddie Ross (stylist, designer and blogger extraordinaire) and Terrain (the Anthropologie-owned garden, nursery and home shop in Glen Mills, PA).
So an event that combined the two- I had to be there!
It was a Fall decorating and styling workshop, hosted by Eddie and held in a cozy little workshop on Terrain's beautiful grounds.
I arrived a bit early last evening and had time to take in the breathtaking plants, flowers and foliage.

I picked up a candle and a beautiful, handmade velvet pumpkin.

Then, it was time for the main event! Everyone gathered in a barn-like space, open, but so warm and filled with the sweet smell of warm

Eddie, his partner, Jaithan, and the staff of Terrain were so welcoming and friendly! Eddie took the time to meet all of us and even poured wine for everyone.

Then we took seats as Eddie demonstrated ways to use gourds in decorating, whether for floral centerpieces or setting a gorgeous crudites platter. He is so engaging, talented and funny- it was just really enjoyable to hear him speak!

Later, after being served delicious homemade butternut squash and apple soup, we each took a spot at pre-set worktables where we got to create our own pumpkin. As we worked, Eddie offered advice and assistance- here's mine as I was working on it.

He also walked us through this beautiful table setting that he'd put together with a mix of some of his favorite finds.

In true Eddie style, it was full of high and low, old a new, rustic and refined. So so pretty.

Just before I headed out for the night with my beautiful Autumn arrangement, I asked Eddie to snap a quick picture with me.
It was such an enjoyable, inspiring evening and I highly recommend you attend an event should Eddie come to your town!

Sweater Weather (Almost!)

After several really lovely pre-Fall days here in Philly, I'm getting excited about the cool weather's influence on my wardrobe! We saw The American this weekend (I really loved it- especially all the driving around the gorgeous Italian country side!). This gorgeous sweater dress, worn by the character Mathilde, seems like such a perfect option for those in-between days. Worn with those classic boots and buttery leather gloves, it's sensuous, cozy and polished.

I started trolling the Net for a similar piece and found this lovely Ralph Lauren option- gorgeous, but I'm not quite sure I want to spend $400 on it.

I'm thinking this one from ModCloth might be a great option. It looks a bit sheer, but I'll bet with boots and tights, it would look gorgeous! And it's only $60!

Does anyone have experience with ModCloth? They have so many adorable things and the prices are great!

(P.S. Happy Daily, I had you in mind when writing this post! I know how much you love sweater dresses!)

It hasn't just been laziness keeping me from blogging in the last couple of weeks, I promise! I took a pretty bad fall that resulted in a (small, but still) fracture of my elbow, huge bruises on both legs, and a very sore wrist and forearm (luckily my left) that has made typing an unpleasant activity.

Luckily my elbow is healing very well and I'm feeling so much better. Now that it's Fall and my class starts in a couple of days, it's officially time to get back to business!

I'm officially a student! Today I signed up for my first class and I'm so excited. About new books and running around campus in crisp fall weather. But mostly about interior design- really digging in and studying it.

It's time to carve out a glamorous little niche for myself, somewhere to lay my books and bury my head in my work! I think the above space will suit me just fine!

Kitchen Reveal

The kitchen is by far the hardest room in the house to photograph! It has been such a dramatic change, but none of these photos quite do it justice. I couldn't get the colors to come out right. Anyway, here goes.
The cabinets were given glossy (actually several glossy) coats of Benjamin Moore's Decorator's White. The wall color is a lovely Sherwin-Williams color called Sea Salt.

I love the kick pleat valence- it's Calico Corners fabric and work.

Larry hung the vintage egg prints and I love them in the kitchen!

Williams-Sonoma canisters were wedding gift and I love them so much! A little morning coffee station on bamboo tray.

The things I love about the kitchen are the same things I don't love about it: that it's small (which forces me to edit constantly), that it's open to the living and dining rooms (which forces me to keep it clean and clutter-free). I dream about marble counters, glass-fronted cabinets, a little Smeg refrigerator, but until then, I'm enjoying this space that is so much brighter and lighter than it was.

Fall Wardrobe Icon- Animal Print coat

I have been obsessing over a leopard/cheetah print coat forever, it seems! I think the image of it being glamorous and classic has been in my head ever since seeing The Graduate back in high school.

I've been scouring eBay for months for either of these Milly options from a few seasons back.

So far, no luck and images of these fashionable girls have been haunting me...

I purchased this short little trench from H & M back in June (in early preparation for Fall, huh?).

Now I've fallen for this coat from Talbots, which seems both infinitely wearable and completely on trend.

I think it might be my fall wardrobe essential!

By a lovely little chance, I find myself in a big plush bed and yummy white robe in the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia! Such a nice little mid-week getaway.

I snapped this photo from our hotel room window with my BlackBerry. Since switching jobs, I have to say I've found myself falling in love with Philly all over again. My new office is a block from Rittenhouse Square (and Anthropologie, Kiehl's, my favorite produce place Sue's...) and I love being right in the middle of the hustle and bustle again.

I'm trying to soak it all in and find as many moments as I can each day to just be happy, exactly where I am.

Tables- coffee and otherwise!

We finally have a coffee table! It was a Craig's List find and I love its brassy patina and the little dash of glam it adds to the room.

I immediately started styling it up, though I have a feeling it will be a revolving tableau. The most fun was gathering some of my favorite books to keep stacked in the little straw tray- a Target find.

The little ceramic conch shell is from Katie Armour Home on Etsy. The candle is from Target's Liberty of London collection and I wish I'd purchased more!

We also added some end tables- perfect resting spots for drinks or tidbit plates. I didn't have the foresight to take a "before" photo, but this little table was picked up for $15 at my favorite thrift store. It was painted a pea green and not-so-attractive, but we gave it a glossy red coat (the room just needed a little pop) and I plan to have a piece of glass cut for the top. I love the way it turned out!

And this little table, from Etsy seller Solstice Home I love! I love that, along with the tray, it adds a natural element to the room and some good texture.

Here's a parting shot of the living room, which is finally feeling pulled together! Now I just need to concentrate on adding artwork to the wall above the love seat to feel like the space is "done."

A real living room!

Last week our Reese arrived! Having a sofa makes the living room feel so complete and I am so happy that it finally made it.

Taking a good photo of the living room is difficult because of the huge picture window- everything is back lit, even on a rainy day like today. But here goes!

I had almost forgotten what this couch looks like- it is very deep and there is a lot of sitting room- especially because the arms are so slim. You can get the Reese in 79, 89 or 99 inches long. Ours is the 89 inch version.

Having the pillows on the sofa, backed up to the curtains, brings everything together! I wish I could find another Megan Park pillow.

With all the upholstered pieces in place, it's clear what I need to work on is a place to rest my drinks! So I'm on the search for little tables- coffee tables, cocktail tables, end tables. We don't have a ton of room, so I'm looking for airy pieces. Hope something turns up soon!

A new guilty pleasure

I'm a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to guilty pleasures. There are so many to indulge in: my Friday delivery of Us Weekly, Pretzel Crisps, pink wine and Lauren Conrad's novels are just a few.

When it comes to my TV choices, it's the more salacious the better! I've become obsessed with Pretty Little Liars.

It's your typical teen drama- slick clothes and music and plot lines- but with a little mystery to give it an edge.

I love artsy Aria, an aspiring writer with lacy tops, little leather jackets and a (little more than a) crush on her adorable English teacher. Gosh, did I ever love my sophomore year English teacher.

The thing that maybe makes me feel a little less bad about my new addiction is the set design is pretty gorgeous, as evidenced in these photos below.

Okay, look beyond the half-naked man to the gorgeous, glass front cabinets, and the neat little boxes contained in them, in the kitchen Hanna and her mom share.

Oh, I wish I could get a full shot of Spencer's bedroom. It is a lovely space with amazing lamps and accessories. The best I can do are these two photos- look at that wallpaper!

Aria's house has some great wallpaper too, and I like the look of the natural wood moldings in their bungalow.

Hopefully as the show goes on this summer I'll be able to scout more photos of the interiors to share!

I love all these rooms by Hollywood stylist and interior designer Estee Stanley, designer of the oft-blogged homes of actresses Claire Forlani and Rashida Jones. They look so livable. And all have such an amazing mix: a little Bohemia, a little natural, a little glamorous. Enough casual to keep them comfortable. Very LA, right?

We've spent much of this weekend being grateful that the little dog next door came home on Friday night. It is a long story, but let's just say we likely won't be asked by our neighbors to dog sit again any time soon.

I'm going to take the opportunity to finally write in this little journal.

I picked it up a few weeks ago when visiting my best friend in Arlington, VA. A little shop called Le Village Marche, but you can also buy it from Amazon.

Do you need a special journal to keep a record of all the things your grateful for? Of course not! But with the splashy color and sweet quotes inside, this little book does make it a lot of fun.

These weeks have been heavy and full and stressful. Fast and loud and crazy.

I neeeeeeded to slow down and be quiet and not think. Enter the hammock I got Larry for Father's Day! He sweetly hung it in the back yard for us last night (his own present!) and I headed out there with a pile of pillows and a magazine and listened to birds and felt breeze and smelled clover. It was just what I needed to recharge.

Besides the couch, which is STILL missing!!!

I felt it lacked warmth and nothing brings warmth and personality to a room like favorite, well-loved books and objects.

The etagere we bought last fall and I just hadn't gotten around to properly styling it up. There's nothing I love as much as pouring over the decisions that go into it: which books, standing up or lying down, bookends, photos, favorite little collectibles to make it interesting.

Eventually I'm thinking we'll paint the etagere some bright shiny color but for now I'm really happy with it!

At last! Our dining room chairs are functional. We picked up the cushions yesterday and I took these photos in the dying light of evening yesterday and today. Couldn't wait to post, though!

I just love the fabric, and the colors bring the whole dining room together.

Yellow and turquoise blues. Chocolate brown.

The little yellow vases are porcelain from the company Middle Kingdom. I bought them at Open House, one of my favorite little shops in Philly. The flowers are left over from an event we had Saturday night.

Now I need to plan a celebratory first meal!

Dining Room Love

Hooray for the dining room and a wonderful husband who patiently hung our new curtains AND the canary prints last weekend.

The chocolate brown, silk curtains are so yummy and these photos just don't do them justice. They are tall and dreamy.

I was worried that being a dark fabric, they might make the space gloomy, but we're lucky to have a big, double, light filled window that lets plenty of light in and frames our pretty view of the backyard. We chose the chocolate to make a connection between the chocolate living room coach and love seat details.

We hung the birds with two little bone mirrors from Anthropologie that I found on sale a while back. I resisted getting mattes for these prints because I wanted to keep them on the small side but goodness, we had a lot of wall to cover!

Lar did such a great job taking measurements and making sure they were hung straight and even. I lack patience and good math skills, so he was best suited to this job.

I planned the layout on the floor.

Here is a detail of the curtains- you can see the braid trim, bringing in turquoise and yellow and just a little bronze-y red from the living room. The colors aren't coming out quite right in these photos, but you'll get an idea.

More good dining room news- the chair cushions are done so we get to pick them up this week! Finally a place to sit!

Part of the fun of decorating has been getting around to some projects I've been wanting to get done forever- like finally splurging on custom framing for some prints I've had sitting around.

The canary prints I purchased from Etsy and eBay and had them slated for the living room. The blues and yellows in each will go well with the Parasols fabric we've picked for the dining room chairs.

The eggs I've had forever, an eBay purchase from several years ago I think. These will go in the kitchen.

With 14 total pieces to frame, it wasn't cheap, but I reconciled it with the fact that we'll have these forever. I did get a bit of deal, too, because the Blick Art Materials store across the street from my office was running a 40% discount. They did an amazing job and had them done in less than two weeks.

The frames are Larson-Juhl and Blick had an amazing selection. It was somewhat hard to choose, but I chose the bamboo because I'm mildly obsessed with everything bamboo (and I hope I'm not going overboard!) and the lovely gilt wash frames for the eggs are just so classic and quiet.

Our rug showed up this week and we couldn't wait to get it down! We'd been in and out of rug showrooms, looking for something antique, Persian and classic, but in the end decided to go with a more casual (and much more budget-friendly) Sisal rug.
We chose this one from Overstock and we're really happy with the price, quality and shipping time!

Frances was concerned as we were rolling it out Thursday night. We got the non-slip rug pad from Overstock, too.

I love the way it brings definition to the space and definitely makes it cozier. My step-son actually declared it "gorgeous!"

Also, I feel like we've built a shrine around the empty space that is STILL waiting for our Reese sofa! Apparently everything coming out of the Mitchell Gold Bob Williams warehouse is running behind...hopefully it won't be too much longer.

Kitchen Sneak Peak

I haven't posted new kitchen photos, but it's coming along and looking very sweet. The new paint (on the cabinets and walls) and a few pretty little accessories have made it a whole new place. I'll snap some in-progress photos when the light gets better but here is a little reveal for now.

It's the switchplate we ordered from Full Circle Studios. I love that it makes turning on the lights an artistic little moment.

We chose it to go with the egg prints we plan to hang in the kitchen. Hopefully we'll be getting those back from the frame shop in the next couple of days.

To say that I've been a touch inpatient while waiting for the house to come together is an understatement! I've been going back and forth: anxious and excited. Anxious that I couldn't move forward without certain elements in place and excited to see it all come together.
Anyway, today we took a major step in the right direction with the delivery and installation of our living room cornice, drapes and a couple of pillows.

The cornice is the same fabric as the chair we had recovered and we had two throw pillows made in the same fabric as the curtains that go under the cornice.

I'm really happy with everything- the look is very rich and classic and very traditional, which surprises me a little bit.

Okay, enough talk! Here are some photos!

The picture window is so wide that I felt it needed a cornice/pelmet box instead of just a plain rod. I actually like the look of sheer white curtains, like the ones in the before, but I wanted to do something fun and colorful.

Now, some "transition" photos:

Nick, the installer who works with Calico Corners, hung the pinch pleat drapes on extension rods first.

And finally, it comes together! From several angles:

I put those little tables up against the window to get an idea of what the pillows (our original, center pillow and the two new ones we had made) will look like under the cornice and drapes.

Pillows! These were designed to flank our original Megan Park pillow on the chocolate brown Reese sofa (which will hopefully be coming soon!). I forgot to take a good photo of them out of the plastic bags, but oh well:

Now, it's on to finding a rug, choosing artwork (from the stash we already have), playing with furniture arrangement (not that we have a lot of options, but just slight movement here and there) and editing our furniture collection down a little bit.

We're still waiting for our couch, curtains and rug for the living room but I'm having fun playing around with smaller elements and accessories.

I love this two tier table we picked up for $15. It'll serve as an end table and a transition piece between the entry way and the rest of the house. I think it'll be a good spot to rest keys and bits of mail.

I want to replace the lamp shade on the vintage blanc de chine lamp (an ebay score)- one more thing to add to the list.

There are so many little projects we still have left to do and I'm checking them off one at a time. Next on the list was finishing the bamboo side board.

If you'll remember, here is the way it looked when we bought it:

I think its original hardware is charming and gives it its character but it had been coated in the same yellow paint as the rest of the piece.

Last week I gathered all the knobs and handles and sprayed them down with paint stripper.

It was a somewhat labor-intensive task, but worth it since they came quite clean and polished up pretty nicely. Here is the finished look:

Doesn't our thrift store find bear a striking resemblance to the Williams-Sonoma Home Hampstead collection?

Theirs goes for a mere $4,000! We still need to get a pretty piece of marble cut for the top but I'm loving the way it looks.

Back from the "spa"

Earlier this week some dear friends returned from far away! Our love seat and chair came back from a reupholstery shop in New York (these we got done through Calico Corners) and I am thrilled!

The little chair looks great:

The fabric is Moritz in Pepper, from Calico Corners. (I can't find it online, but you'll see it again when our cornice comes in.)

Some lessons I've learned:
1) reupholstery isn't necessarily cheap. Because these pieces were passed down from Cootie, it was worth it to me to have them redone, but I nearly could have bought new for the price we paid.
2) however, I like that reupholstery gives old pieces a new life. It's eco-friendly and you'll get an original, one-of-a-kind piece.
3) it pays to get a couple of estimates but convenience also counts. We could have had the job done cheaper, but in the end, the one-stop shopping experience at Calico Corners made it worth a little extra money for us.

While we're waiting for our dining room chair cushions to come back from Solano's (the reupholstery shop in Philly), we got to work sprucing up the chair frames. I sanded and cleaned them with mineral spirits, then Larry got to work painting them a glossy white.

British luxuries

I mentioned my husband was out of town this week but not that he went all the way to London for work (without me! yes I was furious!).

The only thing that could console me was his promise that he would bring me something back and I hinted that I would like it to be Jo Malone.

He brought me back a delicious sampling of amazing smelling things- a bottle of White Jasmine and Mint Cologne, a bottle of 154 Cologne and some French Lime Blossom body lotion. It is all so heavenly.

I hadn't heard of 154 before, but here's the description from the website:
Named after the street number of the first bijou store in London, 154 is a chameleon-like fragrance. Allow yourself to be led on an olfactory journey, from citrus to herbaceous lavender and basil, finishing with a woody base of sandalwood and vetiver that quite simply captivates the senses.

Lar also brought me the latest British Vogue, featuring Gwenyth on the cover. I love all of my lovely gifts, but next time I'm not going to let him go to London without me!

Well, the last two weeks have been a feverish and stressful blur. I got very sick, work has been unbearable and Larry was out of town. I'm finally feeling a little more like myself and my darling returned last night, so the weekend is off to a wonderful start.

House projects were somewhat halted but I do have some reveals to show off!

The dining room is starting to come together. Our bamboo dresser/sideboard looks great in its fresh coat of paint. I have moved the white secretary desk for now and moved our bamboo chairs in. These will get reupholstered and painted, too but so far I'm loving the way it looks!

We're still waiting for our new curtains, I need to hang art and polish up the sideboard hardware. We also picked up these lamps from Home Goods this morning and I love the color they bring to the room.

So, my to-do list:
- marble top cut for sideboard
- paint bamboo chairs in fresh coat of white
- get chair cushions recovered in Parasols print
- get rug
- find frames for canary prints and hang them
- install new drapes when they come
- clean up hardware for sideboard and put back
- chandelier- keep? paint?
- another question- what do we do about hardware- the chandelier and lamp bases are brushed nickle but I ordered brass rings and curtain hardware...also, the hardware for the sideboard is brass. Does it matter?
- style up the top of the sideboard with books and fun vintage objects
- paint light switch covers and outlet covers in same paint as walls

Perfect things

This weekend we threw an impromptu garage sale. I'll admit that I'm something of a recovering shopaholic and had plenty to unload. I got rid of a lot and it felt great! What didn't sell, we dropped off at the Goodwill and I felt instantly lighter and more free.
I'm finding myself being drawn more and more to quality items that will last for long time- things I really love.
What would a closet full of perfect things look like, I wonder? A handful of shift dresses- some for work, some for play. A pencil skirt, a flouncy skirt. A couple of sweet blouses and cardigans.
In the jewelry box? Diamond studs, gold hoops, my husband's vintage watch.
And shoes, just a few perfect pairs of heels and some flat boots.
I still have a ways to go, but turning this corner feels very good.

Movie Monday- Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

We recently upgraded our TV system and now have access to Netflix instant streaming. I've got quite a stack of stylish movies in my queue- classics that I've always wanted to see. Last night we (well, really I, because Larry's head was buried in his laptop) watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I loved it all the way through- Catherine Deneuve is so unbelievably beautiful and wore a parade of impeccable coats.
The colors and interiors were so dazzling. Nearly every room was papered in some wildly paper- stripes and fruits and florals.
It was definitely romantic and sweet and sad. Certainly recommended!

Lee Love

I have a thing for Katie Lee (formerly Joel), as many of my friends know!
I fell in love with her NYC apartment, designed by Nate Berkus and featured in Domino and Town and Country magazines.

And I'm indebted to her for her mustard vinagarette recipe (one part red wine vinegar, one part Dijon mustard, three parts olive oil, then add salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar)- a favorite that we make over and over again to serve with bibb lettuce and avocados.

I think it's possible I might love her sense of style most, though. Gorgeous long locks, clean, fresh scrubbed face and and the most incredible clothes- classic, sometimes preppy but with enough of a bohemian edge to keep things glamorous.

I was really happy to see her in the latest Lonny (love the mix of florals and stripes) and can't wait to make the minted pea soup.

Hooray for the bedroom and the happy plans we have for it!

The jumping off point here is our Amelie sofa.

From my beloved Anthropologie. It really isn't as peacock-y blue as it appears in this photo.

I was thinking blues and greys and I impulsively bought this John Robshaw tulip bedding on Gilt Group.

Then I went to Calico Corners (are you noticing a theme here?). This charming, wonderful fabric had me at first glance:

And if you look closely, you see this happy little fellow:

So wildly appropriate for us since I've nicknamed our homestead Squirrel Run.

Then Jennifer (Calico Corners designer extraordinare- I need to do a full post on her) helped us come up with this:

That's one of our Tulip shams. The pear green "slubby linen" is for a headboard (a DIY project! More details to come) and bedskirt. We'll also use it for piping for a cushion (for the little bench in our bedroom) to be made with that handsome wide-striped blue fabric. The Darjeeling will be the curtains.

I guess this would be a good time to show a before and warning, this photo was taken when the room was extremely messy:

But you'll get the idea of just how badly we need a makeover.

I think we've decided on Essential Grey from Sherwin Williams for the walls.

We might end up painting those bedside tables/chests- more from the Cootie vault.

So many more elements need to come together: bamboo matchstick blinds, wedding photos I want to frame, lighting. I love the direction we're heading in, though.

Oh, the kitchen. So ready to get the kitchen in order!

Once again, the inspiration started with fabric (Calico Corners) and with something we already had- the sweet vintage egg prints you'll see below.

Isn't this fabric so pretty?

It immediately made me think of an exquisite De Gournay wall paper. So lovely and serene. (Image from here.)

We plan to use it for a little kick pleat valence for the kitchen window. Here it is shown with the egg prints:

I've had these so long I don't remember where they came from (and I have a pretty amazing capacity for detail when it comes to shopping). More frames needed. Wish I could afford to get six of these Pottery Barn Gilt Frames.

Then there are these precious switch plates from Full Circle Studio.

Need to choose and order one.

There's really no point in even posting this since it looks so not like it looks in real life, but here is the color for the kitchen walls- Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams.

And the biggest change will probably be repainting the cabinets- white, white, glossy gorgeous white.

Compared to the plans for the living room and dining room, the kitchen will have the sweetest (but hopefully not in a cloying way, right), most vintage-y (but not shabby-esque I hope) look to it, but I think it will be lovely and calming and restful.

I so desperately want to create a very neat and organized inspiration board, but I'm too low tech to figure out how.

In the meantime, here are more elements of the dining room.

That lush brown silk will be turned into drapes and this photo shows how it'll look with the seat cushion fabric.

I have eight of those vintage canary prints- plates from an old book- that tie in the colors so amazingly and I've been holding onto them forever! Can't wait to hang them (finding frames- another project).

That curvy Jonathan Adler lamp is one of a pair, bought at a warehouse sale in NYC a couple of years ago, I thought would tie it all together- however, with the newly acquired faux bamboo sideboard, I'm not sure how they'll work after all. Anyway, here's a look at the direction the dining room will be taking.

Projects and new additions

Planning this decorating project has been so much fun because we're using so many things we've had for a while, only in new ways.

But we've also had our eyes open everywhere for new (old) pieces to fill in where we needed them.

Since we're getting everything in "as-is" (read: super cheap!) condition, we'll be putting a little (in some cases a lot) of TLC into them.

Here we go...

Dining room chairs.

So excited about these! Purchased from ebay and just delivered. A total of six- two arm, four side. They'll be getting repainted and recovered.

This is the fabric for the cushions:

It's called Parasols from Calico Corners. And it looks so much better in person.

But we haven't decided on the color to paint them. A glossy white? Or a shiny turquoise?

Sweet little side table.

I think it'll go right at the top of the entry way stairs and I am dying to pick up an iomoi tray to place right on top- a perfect place to drop keys or stray pieces of mail, yes? Once we get the living room furniture in place we'll decide whether to paint or refinish.

Bamboo side board.

I've been on the hunt for a buffet/side board/server to place under our weird living room/dining room window and look what we found! This Thomasville, faux bamboo dresser/vanity- for a song, I might add. The hardware is TDF and I can't wait to paint it. Again, perhaps a glossy white? It'll bring some continuity to the dining room, with similiarily focused chairs. I can't wait to scrub it clean and fill it with pretty things. I want to have a piece of marble cut for the top, but maybe we'll settle for a piece of beveled mirror for a while.

I think my favorite detail is the little webbing between the legs.

Blanc de chine lamps.

Love, love, love. Growing up, I always adored the (what she called) Ginger Jar lamps in Cootie's house. Loved that you could turn off all but the light in the center of the pretty, pierced porcelain and get these magical shadows and punctured light. Now I finally have a pair of my own (another ebay purchase) but they need to be cleaned and re-wired. Then I'll have to find shades. Thinking these'll go on bedside tables in our room.

The difference a week makes

In the last week we made quite a few changes: the living room, dining room, hallway and entry were all painted. The ceiling and molding also got touched up.

The paint has made such a difference- it's like a breath of fresh air and I don't miss all that yellow a bit! The color is abalone, a Benjamin Moore color described in House Beautiful as "an elegant neutral that deepens and intensifies in the evening, enveloping you in a soft perfume of silvery gray. It has the iridescence of the inside of a shell, and it's that shimmer that makes it sexy." Um, I'm in love.

You'll see we just put everything (over-sized seating, and soon-to-be gone accessories) back for now, but it won't be long for the next round of changes!

We pulled up all the carpet! My very strong and very fast husband did an amazing job ripping up that gross, past-its-prime carpet. He's like a machine when he gets started on a project- and he doesn't stop until it's done. The hardwood floors that were underneath are in good, but not great, shape. I think I may slowly be wearing L down- he's beginning to see just how beautiful they would look if we refinished them and stained them dark.

We also ordered our couch. We've chosen the Reese sofa from Mitchell Gold Bob Williams and we're getting it in a chocolate brown velvet- yummmmm.

I love its clean lines and classically modern shape.

Now we're waiting for that, plus our old love seat and chair to be recovered. I'm on the hunt for side tables and/or a coffee table for the living room arrangement.

I'm really excited about the reupholstery- especially the fabric choices. For Cootie's love seat, we're doing this Cabochon from Calico Corners- it's cream and chocolate brown, so I can't wait to see how it goes with our Reese.

A few Befores and one After...

Our painter came by Friday to start patching up the walls and he's lined up to start with the color (!!!) on Monday, so I realized I needed to quickly snap some "Before" photos. We've been making gradual changes over the last several months and I wish I'd thought to take some back when I first moved in (though we'd made a few updates even before that). But a new color is what will really change the look of the place, while we wait for our curtains, reupholstery and new furniture and accessories.

Here is the dining room as it is now- the table is a new/old purchase from one of our favorite spots and we're waiting for our ebay chairs.

And the living room. The over sized couch and love seat will be replaced by a new couch, plus a little love seat and chair that belonged to Cootie that we're having reupholstered.
We're also pulling up the carpet and have a cornice and drapes coming.

And the kitchen, which was a bit of a mess when I took these photos! I think this might be the most dramatic change- the cabinets will be painted a glossy white and the walls a pretty pale green-gray. We're having a little kick-pleat valence made with this lovely fabric (more on that later) and I think we're going to do something with the floors- maybe black and white linoleum tiles.

And one quick little "After" we made this weekend. It's so nice to be married to a handy man! I won this faux bamboo tole chandelier on ebay and couldn't wait to get it up- Larry hung it last night and I am so happy with it! We might end up painting it, and I want to spruce up the little shades with a ribbon border but just seeing it up here makes me so happy!

I'm sitting here as our Coca-Cola ham and biscuits are cooking in the oven- they smell so good!
I set the table for Easter with pink ranunculus, our wedding place mats (monogrammed with a G, given to us by Larry's dad and Lori) and vintage napkins from Haus Proud on Etsy. And of course our tiny tapers and little bunny candle holders from Williams Sonoma.

It seems like Spring happened overnight! We're so lucky that the last lady who owned our house planted lots of bulbs in the backyard- tulips, daffodils, hyacinth. It's such a happy sight!

Today I'm celebrating the last of my days as a twenty-something! I'm off to a hair appointment at lunch, then I plan to get a mani before heading to dinner with one of my dearest pals.

Should be a lovely way to wrap up the decade!

The thing about turning 30 (in my experience so far) is that it makes you feel like you've got to have it all together. Suddenly I'm feeling totally accountable for all my loose ends and unanswered life questions. I'm making myself crazy!

I think a little bubbly will go a long way in soothing my anxious little brain so when I wake up tomorrow, I'll have a fresh and sunny outlook.

Things I love about being home...

We had a quick and very happy trip down to Jacksonville for the weekend.

Jacksonville is the place I grew up and it will always feel like home. There is my family- my mom, dad, sister and grandmother, not to mention aunts and uncles and cousins.

But there are sights and smells and sounds and tastes that always comfort me.

Here are a few of the little details that are lingering in my mind as we settle back in to a wet and chilly Northeast.

Waking up under a pale yellow chenille bedspread and the softest cotton sheets.
Sheets that are soft from years and years of washing and love.

The great big oak and magnolia trees, covered in so much Spanish moss. This is a view right up.
The fresh air and sunshine did us so much good.

Cootie's camellias.
They're about done for the year and I'm grateful I got to enjoy the
last lovely blooms before all the Spring flowers show their faces.

Drinking coffee and reading the last several months of Southern Living. It's been a while since I picked up a copy and I'm so delightfully surprised! It's always been a great magazine but these latest issues seem so fresh and modern.

Major Handbag Analysis

I'm doing research into a new purse. A birthday purse. As I get older (hello 30!!!), I want to pare down, to buy only pieces that will last for many years- good, really investment-worthy pieces.

I'm continuing to save for the ultimate (vintage, lambskin, black Chanel 2.55) but until that day, I've found a few bags I could love.

I realize I'm into top-handle bags that have long straps to wear cross-body or on the shoulder. Also, the classic bucket-shaped bag. And, Chanel-esque details like leather quilting and chain straps.

The Holy Grail of purses for me. Vintage Chanel 2.55. Le sigh.

Fleabags The Salt Bag in Sahara. Love the chain strap, top handle design and little punch of blue on that yummy tan leather.

Kate Spade's Gold Coast Elizabeth. Gosh, all that quilting and those chain handles make it very Chanel-esque. Love the old-lady chic of the gold leather, too!

I am really loving this one. Such a classic shape. I love the color, the supple leather. And it has such an adorable polka dot lining! Coach Peyton Leather Drawstring Crossbody.

Okay, so this one would be a big old splurge, but I wonder if it will eventually go on sale? It's Anya Hindmarch's Bonita Calfskin Shoulder Bag. So ladylike and prim, but with just a touch of slouch. I can see myself carrying it every day.

I was slightly underwhelmed by the Red Carpet fashions at this years Academy Awards. However, I found a few stand outs!

Queen Latifah looked stunning and graceful. It was such a lovely choice for her!

Helen Mirren is an aspiration. She's beautiful and elegant.

I think this is such a classic and sweet choice for Cameron! She looks glamorous in an Old Hollywood kind of way.

With so many images swimming around in my head, I knew I needed to reign it in or I'd never be able to start.

Keeping our budget in mind, I thought it would be best to incorporate all the things we already have. This also means the house will be infused with soul, as I always think you should be surrounded with meaningful objects and pieces collected over time.

I have it on good authority that you should start with one thing you love, no matter how small. I had an epiphany the other night, when the image of this beautiful Megan Park pillow popped into my head. I bought it several years ago from the John Derian Dry Goods store in NYC and it's been in storage since I moved in with L.

I pulled it out and have fallen in love with it all over again. The lipsticky red and the conch shell coral. That deep bronze has such a lovely metallic glow to it.

(And doesn't that lilacish mocha throughout remind you of Chanel's color of the moment?)

The Beginning

It is official: the house decorating has begun!

After months of dreaming, pouring over my old Dominos, tons of design blogs and anything else home-decor related we are finally ready to get started on sprucing the place up!

Back story: We got married in November and I moved from the city into L's place, a home he's owned for about five years now. As many men are apt to do, when he moved in, L slapped up some artwork and furniture and that was it. The walls remained the same goldenrod yellow throughout (with the exception of some faded and dingy wallpaper downstairs and a terra cota in the kitchen) and even the windows were left with the previous owners' treatments (can't say I'm at all surprised they left them).

The house isn't at all "me" and not really "us" either and I'm so lucky L is completely open to a cosmetic redo! Since we're not staying in this house forever (probably for the next four years at the most) we don't want to spend a lot. So no major reno work. Just paint, furniture and other little pretties to make it a happy home.

Okay, all of that to say that I was feeling overwhelmmmmmed. With so many lovely images turning over in my head I had no idea where to start.

Here are a few ideas I love:

Two photos of Kate Spade's kitchen. What I love here is the black and white floor, the crisp shade and the art work propped up against the wall. Adorable and clean and fresh.

This image, from Martha Stewart Living, I found on Little Green Notebook, a constant source of inspiration. I love the arrangement of the prints, the sconces and the colors. Ironically, our whole house is a similar shade of yellow right now! While we're repainting, we're still using little splashes of yellow. I love the warmth of corals, pinks and gold.

Amanda Peet's staircase from Domino. My dream would be to ebonize our floor, paint the risers white and paint our hand-rails, which are a little like the ones above, black. L isn't totally with me on the floor-redo, so we'll see what happens!

You know how much I love Eddie Ross and all of his projects. I was particulary inspired by this post, about his makeover of a dowdy secretary desk.

Here is Eddie's result:

It reminded me so much of this gorgeous cabinent in the dining room (one of my favorite rooms ever) of Windor Smith:

Back in the Spring, Larry and I bought an old secretary desk from this place called Wacker's Trading Post in Pitman, NJ (the next town over from us) with the intention to spruce it up a la Eddie.

I must tell you, it took a little more time than expected! The oil based paint took forever to try between coats and there were many weekends too rainy to paint.

But it is finally finished and I'm very happy with the result!

So, here is the before. We had started stripping it at this point:

I have the top of it stocked with all of our vintage and special glassware: our Eddie Ross champagne coupes, my favorite Anthropologie polka dot tumblers, Morroccan tea glasses that Larry's daughter brought us from her trip there last year, sweet little two-handled teacups and saucers and other special little things.

In the desk portion are other special entertaining objects: a pair of antique salt cellars, my great grandmothers silver plates, taper candles, a set of vintage butter pats and a pair of mother of pearl salt spoons. The three drawers hold all our cloth napkins and other special linen.

As a finishing touch, I lined the drawers and the backsides of the mirrors with some pretty scented drawer liner that was a shower gift.

Back Home Farm

We spent last weekend in Ohio and Kentucky visiting Larry's family. His grandmother, brother and uncles live in Cincinnati, and his step-father, Ted, who raised Larry, lives in Mayslick, Kentucky, with his wife, Lori.

I love spending time with Ted and Lori, and I love their home. They live on a farm, with a stocked pond and a horse, and Lori maintains an amazing garden. When we arrived on Saturday, Lori fixed us a plate of smoked Gouda cheese, country ham, saltine crackers, green olives and pickled watermelon rind. We snacked while we sat with them in the kitchen, looking out a big bay window to their fields below.

While Larry and Ted went downstairs to watch the Reds game, Lori took me on a drive, pointing out all the Amish farms (there is a big Amish community in their area), and the homes of her uncle and aunt and father who live nearby.

We stopped at Nancy's grocery. Nancy is in her 70s, though her voice is young and strong and you wouldn't know it. Her store is a little place, minimally stocked, to keep her overhead low. Three cans of pringles potato chips, two canisters of dry Quaker oats, a few toiletry items: toothbrush, razors. She has a little deli counter where she serves "Methodist Portions" (apparently meaning large) of chicken salad or egg salad to her customers. There is one long, wooden table in the center of the store where people come by to take lunch.

Nancy is a born caretaker. She lives in the back of the grocery with her brother, who has cerebral palsy. Every day she calls on the little old ladies who can't leave their houses. And she opens her shop so early to make sure anyone who needs breakfast is able to get it.

On the way back home, we stopped at an Amish roadside stand to buy tomatoes (Lori's aren't really ripe yet). The family had planted pumpkins early, and there were two big ones there for sale. The little girl who lives there used one as a stepping stool to get on top of the table.

When we got home, Lori took me on a tour of her garden, pointing out tomatoes, okra, green beans, lettuce, potatoes. She has everything growing! We picked what was ripe: cucumbers, peppers, wild blackberries, a few green beans and the little yellow pear tomatoes. I ate a few right from the vine.

I arranged our salads and they were gorgeous, full of color. Lori knows how much I love real blue cheese dressing, and she had made me some- so creamy and decadent. She served dill butter (fresh dill from her garden, naturally!) with our bread. Then she brought out angel hair pasta with these amazing spicy shrimp (the recipe is from A Summer Book by Susan Branch). She served it in an old ceramic tureen, something she's had for years and with the best patina that only well-loved and well-used objects posses. Stamped Palo Alto on the bottom. For dessert we had a creamy vanilla cake with brandied cherries and vanilla ice cream on top. The little cherries- so full of flavor. Lori canned them last summer after she picked them all from a friend's tree. I love knowing right where my food came from. Last time we were there she served us Apricots soaked in brandy. The apricots were from a tree her mother planted.

Larry and I take the downstairs bedroom, that is a dark and wonderful cave! We sleep so well on a king size bed. It is heaven. Especially when you get to wake up to fresh coffee, a bowl of sliced peaches and as many slices of sweet cantaloupe as you can eat. I was already full when Lori started making pancakes and bacon, served with her homemade blackberry syrup. We ate and drank from Staffordshire blue and white dishes, Ted's favorite.

I never want to leave Back Home Farm, which is what Ted and Lori call their homestead. Our visit was so quick- a mere 24 hours. But the visit carries me for weeks since I always feel so refreshed and pampered when we leave.

I just finished reading Girls In Trucks by Katie Crouch. (Thanks for passing it along, Veggie Girl.) At the end of the book, Katie talks about the importance of the cover and how much impact that photo, taken by Cig Harvey, has had on her, the book and the book's readers.

Here are more of Harvey's gorgeous photos, all featuring that dotted tulle gown, which, according to Crouch, belongs to a friend of the photographers and was handmade by her mother.

Cootie's China

Cootie, my grandmother, is one of my favorite people in the world. I am lucky enough that she lived just moments from my parents and me for most of my childhood and I spent loads of time with her when I was a little girl.
She's taught me so much: how to identify herbs by smell, how to cane a chair, how to take a closet door off its hinges to paint it (and get it back on!), how to refinish an old wood dresser, how to fold a fitted sheet so it lays flat in the linen closet, how to make the best ambrosia and cheese grits and carrot cake.
Her home is full of objects I've loved my whole life, familiar and part of the family after all these years using them every day.
She inherited her China from my great grandmother (Cootie's mother-in-law) Milly. They're Spode's Tower, a pattern first introduced in 1814 by Spode, and one that is still in production today.

Whenever we sit down to a meal served on those plates, I get lost in the little scene, just like I got lost in it when I was a younger. I remember sitting at her table, being mesmerized by the bridge and the stream, and the two people washing clothes (or maybe shaking out their picnic blanket?), the birds in the field. Then there's the tower, of course, and the house in the distance with smoke billowing out of its chimney.

According to this site, "the Tower depicts the Bridge of Salaro near Porta Salara, Rome. The bridge, which originally had a keep built on top of it, survives today although it is now unfortunately underneath the main route leading out of Rome to the airport."
They are made in blue and pink (Cootie's set is pink, though I always thought of it more as a warm, light russet-y color). Many of hers have chips and cracks, the kind of wear you'd expect when the plates have been used for 100 years, like hers have. I can't even think about all the meals that have been served.
I love the collection of unusual serving pieces she has, too:

Cootie said I could take a few plates, and I'm thinking of hanging some on the wall in the dining room once Lar and I get settled in. I'd love to have a little piece of her home in our home.

Dear Friend

I am so lucky I got to spend some time with my precious friend Jamie this weekend and her most adorable little baby boy, Walker!
Friends since 7th grade- I can't believe I've known her so long. When we were having some trouble finding a priest to marry us, I thought I'd ask Jamie to perform the ceremony for us and I still love that idea, though we have found a wonderful priest to do it.
She's one of the most upbeat and lovely ladies I know, with tons of family and friends in her life, so any time I can spend with her is time that I cherish.

Hectic (Healthy) Snacking

This has been an unbelievably hectic couple of weeks. Event Season is in full swing at work, which means every day there is a wine tasting, golf tournament, fashion show or stewardship dinner going on. Sounds like fun (and there are fun moments, for sure) but it is taking it's toll on my sleeping, eating and exercising habits.
I have a bad habit of turning towards unhealthy snacking when times get tough and I'm really trying to reign in the unhealthy eating (especially with a wedding just six months away!).
Here are two favorites I've recently discovered.
The first are these amazing bottled iced teas from Harney & Sons. If the gorgeous, wall paper-esque labels don't get you, then words like Soothing, Refreshing, Energizing and (my favorite) Transporting, certainly should. Each flavor is made from fresh fresh-brewed organic teas, with only five grams of organic cane sugar and honey per bottle! (FYI, Veggie Girl, at 40 calories per bottle it's only one point on the WW Scale!)

Also, I bought a little bag of these pop chips at the market today and found them completely satisfying! They're not fried, they're not baked- they are actually popped. As a result, they're super crispy and light. Sold in 100-calorie bags, it was a perfect way to snack without feeling guilty afterwards.

I posted about the fab champagne coupes L ordered me for my birthday. Well, I had a personal note from Eddie Ross that makes them all the more fab!

Since L purchased them before Eddie had time to post a real description with them, I emailed him to ask for one (my favorite part is reading his wonderful little comments about each item and fun ways to incorporate them into home decor/table setting/everyday use.

Here's what he said:

Early Birthday Prezzie!

I am a recent fan of Eddie Ross and his oh-so-inspiring blog and etsy shop. I'm telling you, I feel refreshed after reading his posts, ready to tackle my home, get it ship-shape, and really take care of the things I already have.

Whether it's a fresh coat of paint or a velvet drawer lining, his attention to detail to the special objects in his life really speaks to me.

It's become an obsession to browse his etsy shop, reading the adorable descriptions he includes with each hand-picked item he posts for sale.

Until two days ago, I hadn't purchased anything, but then I found these!

A set of 10, star-etched champagne coupes! A gorgeous, Gatsby-like champagne saucer has been on my list forever, and a complete set of 10? Had to!

I'm so lucky L understands my passion for specific and precious items like this and that he was willing to scoop them up for me as an early birthday present. (The big day is next week).

I can't wait til they arrive!

A friend just got a new puppy and I'm so happy for her! Having longed for a Dachshund pup for so long, she's finally got one to call her own and I feel we must celebrate.

Did you know they make a "Congrats on Your New Puppy" card? In this case, they being this adorable company, Love and Luck Greetings. I picked it up at Paper on Pine, a favorite stationary shop here in Philly.

Next it was on to another Philly favorite, Doggy Style, where the shop girls recommended this JW Pet Dino rubber dog toy, which is apparently great for a teething puppy.

I also picked up a couple of handmade doggy treats. They look good enough to eat myself. (I shall refrain, however!)

I'm so excited to see her tonight and meet her own Mr. Monkey!

Little red scarf

Some years ago my mother (a teacher) came home with a stack of discarded library books. At the top of the heap: a tattered old copy of Jenny's Birthday Book.
First published in the 1940s, Esther Averill's lovely little story of the shy cat named Jenny Linsky won me over in an instant. Jenny's a city cat (Greenwich Village) with loads of fashion sense: she never ventures forth without her red scarf, a gift from her kindly owner Captain Tinker.

I started collecting other books in the series Averill wrote about Jenny and her friends, Romulus and Remus, Checkers, Edward, Macaroni and the fancy Madam Butterfly. And remember Pickles? Yes, he makes a cameo, too!

The books had been out of print for years so I had to scour eBay and used book stores until the New York Review of Books wisely brought them back. They look handsome in the yellow covers and red binding, though I'm partial to my well-loved little copies. I'm just glad the books are back for a whole new generation to adore!

Best seat in the house

This little fellow has the coziest spot in the whole shop. We spotted him on the way home from breakfast Saturday morning, snoozing on the most scrumptious looking throw.
He's lucky to reside at City Cheateau- such an amazing store here in Philly.
You'll find one-of-a-kind antique and vintage furniture and accessories, lovingly restored/refurbished/recreated.
The owners also produce their own line of pillows and throws, exclusive to City Cheateau. Check out a selection of the fabulousness here.

Street Music

Every couple of months I spot this man on the Philly streets. He sets up on some sidewalk somewhere and plays his beautiful music. I believe the instrument is this: the Er-hu, a traditional Chinese instrument. This morning as I hurried to the post office, I heard his music from around the corner.

The instrument makes such a mournful, haunting sound. Such a contrast to the noisy, city sounds of buses rushing by and horns honking and people shouting (which is constant here in Philadelphia).

I thank this man for adding a richness to my day. For waking up in the morning and finding himself a piece of sidewalk and offering his songs up to the world.

Layers of loveliness

Isn't it lovely when a perfume company thinks outside the bottle?

I love it when there's more to choose from in a fragrance line than the standard Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette.

My signature scent, Narcisco Rodriguez For Her, has lots of lovely ways to layer the gorgeous scent, including a mist for the hair and a shimmering body powder, ingeniously stored in a see-through wand and released from a fluffy brush directly to your shoulders and neck!

Another favorite: Kai. L bought me a little vial of the long-lasting oil and the line also contains a luxurious body polish and body glow, an incredibly sensual hydrating mist.

Clean Air Fund

Yay! L returns tonight after a week of travel!

I plan to surprise him with a clean car. I organized all his loose change and dusted his dash and console last night. Now I'm off to vaccum it!

Maybe I'll order one of these for him. According to Amazon, the Borim Air Freshener for Vehicles uses bamboo carbon to absorb harmful pollutants from the air including allergens, bacteria and viruses and releases negative ions that freshen the air and FAR infrared radiation that helps you relax, eases joint pain, and improves circulation.

Sounds super high-tech and it's certainly nicer to look at than those Christmas-tree shaped cardboard things you see hanging from the rearview mirror!

Fall Field Trip

We made a trip to Terrain at Styer's on Saturday, arriving just in time for brunch.

The cafe, situated in this beautiful old greenhouse, is great, serving the best La Colombe coffee and fresh honeywheat bread- baked in a terra cotta pot- with tomato butter. Delish!

Coffee was served in these great mugs. So cozy!

We stayed to check out all the gorgeous pumpkins. I'm so inspired by their fall vignettes- the use of greens and whites and purples is so fresh for autumn!

In Chasing Harry Winston, Lauren Weisberger's latest, one of the main characters has a transformative moment after swaddling herself in an ultra-luxurious cashmere robe.

She buys the robe for herself as a way of marking her 30th birthday. I think I'll follow suit in a couple of years when I turn the big 3-0.

I am addicted to body scrubs and for me, the grainer and gloppier the better!
